I’m beginning to believe that landlording should be illegal.
It’s an inherently oppressive, exploitative relationship whereby the landlord controls the way in which the lessee lives and extracts rent that is, from the lessee’s standpoint, money poured down the drain in lost equity that they couldn’t begin building for themselves and their future.
Thus, the lessee is being exploited for their inability to buy equity at the same time as they’re being economically oppressed by being forced to pay a rent which precludes them from building equity and a better, more financially-secure life for themselves.
There are far more just possibilities, including anything increasing home affordability through new financing mechanisms (such as more through more collective investments, ‘microfinancing’ and ‘crowdfunding’) as well as the proliferation of smaller, less expensive dwelling options (like ‘tiny homes’ being made legal, which they often aren’t depending upon local zoning laws).
